Two positive declarations from both the Burnside and then Sydenham skippers weren’t quite enough to get a result in the Prem Mens match at Burnside. However, the Championship side dominated their 2nd day to get a win at Sydenham, and although the Div 1 boys went down to a heavy loss, Div 2 had a comfortable victory across from them on Sydenham 2. The Prem Woman had a bye.
The Premier Men completed a rare first up win when they skillfully turned their first day advantage into a fine victory in their match against Riccarton at Hagley. The win was backed up by the Premier woman who hammered St Albans in their 1-dayer across at Burnside Park.
The opening round of the 2020-21 season produced no better evidence that quality preparation inevitably produces quality results. Since the middle of August club coach Matt Bell has been skilfully managing the massive turn-outs of 35-40 morning grade players at practice, and in ensuring that everyone got equal time to hone their skills, his players would have started this season feeling more on top of their game than they would have in recent years.
