There is a Golden Oldies Sports Celebration being held in Christchurch during April this year featuring ten sports. One of these is cricket. For obvious reasons it is being played during the first week of the month. Games are being held on Monday, (Easter Monday), 2 April, Wednesday, 4 April, and Friday, 6 April. They are likely to be of 35 overs duration per side although some teams may wish to play 40 over games.
Some 50 to 60 teams are expected to attend. 50 to 60 teams equate to 50 to 60 umpires each playing day.
The Canterbury Regional Umpires and Scorers Association Inc need umpires for these games. It is beyond the scope of their organisation to supply these numbers so they are looking for assistance from the various Christchurch clubs. Anyone who enjoys umpiring, whether qualified or not, would be a welcome addition to the umpiring ranks for this tournament.
Golden Oldies Cricket is all about enjoyment of the game rather than fierce competition so I am sure if you are able to umpire one or more games you will find it a very enjoyable experience. Benefits available to the participating umpires include free attendance at the opening ceremony on Sunday, 1 April, catering on game days, a free Golden Oldies promotional tee shirt, and a Christchurch Casino goodie card pre-loaded with $100.
If anyone in the Sydenham Cricket Club is available to umpire during this tournament on one or more days could you please contact David Miller as soon as possible with your expression of interest (and your shirt size).
