One Day Competition - Cranfield Glass 3C Cardinals vs BWU, 3C, Sydenham, 29th October 2011
After an interrupted start to the season the Cardinals returned to the hallowed turf of the SCG on Saturday. It was also the Cardinals WAGs and Supporters Day where the Cardinals put on a day in the sun for everyone. The BBQ was roaring and the Old Mout Cider was on ice. It was a great day for cricket.
After winning the toss the Cardinals decided to bat first and get some runs on the board first. After being 13 for 4 the Cardinals were eventually dismissed for 84. A disappointing effort on a track that was playing quite well. Pete O'Shea, Tom Pritchard, Jamie Livingstone and Jared Mitchell all got starts but didn't go on, giving away their wickets more than BWU taking them. Manny Robert was left 11 not out.
At the change of innings a couple of Old Mout Ciders went down well as the sun was starting to crank up and it was hoped that these could give the Cardinals the bit of extra energy they needed to defend such a small total.
BWU openers came to the crease with confidence and even had helmets on, god knows why! With the new ball Ben Larter and Livingstone lead the way. The ball was hooping around and the batsmen had no answer, getting there runs either through edges or extras. With the pressure on, the Cardinals chipped away through out the innings picking up wickets at regular intervals. There was also some outstanding fielding, which is a major improvement on previous seasons. Pritchard bowled 8 overs on the trot and was rewarded with a wicket. Larter finished his 8 overs with 3-1 and Livingstone 2-16 off his 8.
Unfortunately the Cardinals couldn't sneak the last 2 wickets and BWU finally got the 85 runs in the 35th over. A great effort all round to make BWU really work for their runs. It all bodes well for the rest of the season.
