One Day Competition - 3B Allstars vs The Buffaloes, 3B, Sydenham, 7th January 2012
The game was delayed as the pitch was prepared for the match and therefore the game was reduced to 30 overs. We were fortunate to have the services of David Fleming from the President Cardinals and a few players from the 2B 20/20 Comp.
Winning the toss, the Sydenham Allstars chose to bowl first. Runs were not easy to come by for the Buffaloes, but they got the score ticking over and by the 19th over the score was 83 without loss and gave them a great platform to launch from in the final 10 overs. Both openers from the Buffaloes scored half centuries. In the final 6 overs of the Buffaloes innings runs were difficult to come by through fantastic fielding and tight bowling. The Buffaloes concluded their innings with 149/2.
The Sydenham Allstars knew 5 runs an over was achievable, however with a collapse in the batting, the task looked daunting. Within the first 10 overs the Sydenham Allstars were 33/8. The experience of David Fleming kept the score ticking over as he established partnerships with Abraham Atherton and John Hawes.
David kept the good ball out, however ensured that all the bad balls were dispatched to the boundary. His levelled head ensured that we kept the score ticking over. Although we had some low scoring overs, we capitalised with some valuable overs of 8-10 runs. The 9th wicket partnership was worth 49 runs with Abraham Atherton being dismissed for 29 with the score at 82. John Hawes came to the crease with 6 overs remaining. John dispatched the bowlers with some elegant shots and he helped increase the run rate. As the final over was concluded the Sydenham Allstars had reached 129/9. Although we lost by 20 runs, the Allstars showed great composure to bat the full 30 overs after the loss of 8 quick wickets. John Hawes and David Fleming both finished the game on 35 not out, with the 10th wicket partnership being 47 unbeaten.
