One Day Competition - Cranfield Glass 3C Cardinals vs Miller Bar, 3C, SCG #2, 11th February 2012
Rossey filled in as Skipper for our absent Skipper Livo and proceeded to lose the toss and have us inserted on a green, slow, seaming wicket.
Some quick runs from the openers Mitch & Thommo had us 25/0 in a few overs, but then we suffered a middle order collapse. Larts hit 28 all in boundaries off about 10 balls, but then became another victim of their medium pacer who ended up with 6 wickets. In a few balls we were 36/3 then 65/6. Rossey batted well with Manny to steady the ship scoring valuable runs and putting on 30 runs. The loss of both batters had us looking very shakey at 70/8.
However the lower order rallied and scored vital runs to keep us in the game. Pezza & Krefty scored 21 & 16 batting at 9 & 10 which kept us in the game as we thought a minimum of 120 was required to stay in the game. In the end the lower order boomed it and got us through to 138 all out.
By the time they batted the pitch had dried out a lot and was playing very well. We picked up an early wicket against what looks like a very good batting side. We picked up another couple of wickets thanks to Kezza Williams, and a stunning catch at short cover from Thommo, which was on its way to the boundary before he leapt up and grabbed it out of the air.
At the half way point they were 65/4 and looking comfortable. Pezza picked up a vital bowled and then Krefty came back on and knocked over 3 wickets in 2 overs bringing us right back into the game. This exposed the tail, and in the tradition of the Cardinals the skipper brought himself on to knock them off. Rossey picked up two more wickets and they were 110/9.
Some big shots from their last two brought them back into it with just 11 runs required for the win. Having hit six over midwicket their last batter (with ten overs left and 11 runs required) tried the same shot again to another yorker, and lost his middle stump, bringing on mass celebrations.
Due to Livo not organising Old Mout Cider for Krefty for the player of the day, Cranfield Glass put on a bar tab for the team to celebrate the win back at the bowls club.
Cardinals still sit 2nd equal with Merivale-Papanui, but the Miller Bar are now only 5 points ahead in 1st place.
