One Day Competition - Cranfield Glass 3C Cardinals vs Merivale Papanui, 3C, SCG #3, 10th March 2012
Rocked up to Sydenham 3 to play a strong Merivale Papanui side in a match to decide who would finish 2nd or 3rd heading into the semi finals. Thanks to some last minute SOS messages going out we put out a side thanks to Jon & the Goats providing 3 players.
Good hard looking deck. Rossey lost the toss and we were inserted (cue Bert Walker joke). Jon Bennett & Jacob steadied the ship against some good bowling from MP. We got to the 20 over drinks break at a steady 60/2. Extras were the top score at this point with 27 of the 60 runs.
Good cameos from Jon Bennett & Tom Adams kept the score ticking along. At this point we were hoping for a score about 160, but then Rossey decided to unleash. He scored 91 in quick time with some huge straight 6’s into the trees and nearly reaching Brougham St.
Well supported by Manny with a vital 15 in singles, the pair propelled us to 215. Pezza stepped up and calmly sent his first and only ball over point for 6. Extras were the 2nd top score with 45.
On a good batting deck MP lost wickets quickly with Lance taking 4-13. Lances’s calm and relaxed manner was again on show as he politely directed a couple of batsmen back to the pavilion. At the other end Pezza opened up and bowled 3 overs (not 4) without luck, and was followed by Manny who bowled tight and picked up a good couple of wickets.
At drinks MP were struggling at 61/6. Spook came in and bowled with pace (bionic arm) and swing (wide outside off) and turn (on the 3rd bounce) and was unplayable. Spook was unlucky not to pick up more wickets.
Rossey came on and bowled 2 overs of impressions including Malinga, Morkel & Styris. Jonny Bennett bowled well and picked up a couple of wickets as well. MP were bowled out for 89.
We have now secured 2nd place heading into the semi finals in two weeks time. We have the Miller Bar this weekend as a prelude to a potential final showdown.
We will however be without the services of Krefty who is attending the Taylor Swift concert in Auckland.
We will however welcome the return of our absentee skipper Livo wearing a Leprechaun outfit in honour on St Patricks (the patron saint of Gypseys) Day.
