President Cardinals Match Report (26th January 2013)

One Day Competition - President Cardinals vs BWU, Burnside Park #4, Presidents, 26th January 2013

This game was played on yet another superb summers day on a track that had been used all week for the U19 National tournament. It looked a good track but as the day wore on it showed signs of being tired with little or no water being used due to the tournament. BWU were 1st equal and having played and lost to them 2 weeks earlier, their team had 8 new players, so we backed ourselves in this game.

The Cardinals got to get first use of the track. We started slowly scoring at around 3 runs an over. Yogi went early to a fine slip catch and Kev Moore to a full bunger that he managed to find the fielder perfectly. Half a metre either way and they'd still be chasing the ball. Ken and Matt managed to steady the ship, picking up a few boundaries, while grabbing the singles as they were available. At the 20 over mark we were 62/2, and then the wheels fall off! First Matt missed a straight one to be bowled for 21 and then Ken ran himself out for 31. Three more wickets fall quickly, leaving Geoff Miller to try and rescue the innings on his own. In the end we limped to 127 in 37 overs, Geoff 39 not out. Only 3 batsman made double figures, a continuation of our batting woes.

Quick wickets were required to get us back in the game so attack was the motto of the innings. This reaped early rewards with Jules picking up a wicket and Ken grabbing 2 in his second over to have BWU sitting at 9/3. This became 13/4 with a Kev Moore "special" C&B that no-one else even thought about getting in the way. This then came 31/5 with Matt getting one. We were in the boxseat.

Andrew Hintz and Gerald Barrett then took the game away from the Cardinals, especially with a brutal innings from "Sticky" Barrett. His 78no was the difference in the end between the 2 teams. He and Hinty (28) added over 70 for the 6th wicket, when a brilliant runout was made by a Jules boundary throw and Kev's backhander to find Hinty short trying for his 3rd run. No one runs 3's in Pressies Hinty!

At this stage we had a slim chance, with Flem picking up our 7th victim, but in the end Sticky got them through to a tight win. He batted brilliantly, hitting 4 huge 6's at a time when we had the upperhand.

Ken 2 for 7 off 8 overs (including 5 maidens), Jules 1/22 off 5, Dave 1/24 off 7, Matt a tight 1/15 off 7 and Kev 1/14 off 4 overs, but in the end we didn't get enough runs to defend, although we gave it a good go. One player in the end made the difference. Hinty took it on himself to keep Ken out, just, and with Sticky, they did the business.

A disappointing end for the Cardinals, especially having them 31/5, but it just wasn't to be!
