Brendon Laughton smashed 229 not out yesterday for the President Cardinals team against OBC at Elmwood Park. This exception innings contained 18 6s and 16 4s, and plundered all bowlers to all parts of the ground. OBC bowlers were no slugs, with ex Black Cap Aaron Gale one of the opening bowlers, but all of them felt the onslaught by Laughts during the innings. At times there were 9 fielders on the boundary but even this didn't stop the boundaries flowing!
Kevin Condgon said after watching this amasing inning, "those of us on either side playing or observing in this match, it was unanimous that in all of our many decades of cricketing experience none of us had played in a 40 over game (in fact any game) in which one side had scored 400 plus runs, or one player had scored a double century, let alone 229*".
Brendon after getting to his 200, got a standing ovation not only from his team mates and opposition, but also from both teams of the other two games on the park. Laughts was presented by the opposition captain between innings with the match ball, a very sporting gesture.
Sydenham finished 402/4 after their 40 overs. 175 for the first wicket with Anthony Wild (78) was followed by partnerships of 52 with Kevin Moore (4), 109 with Matt Loose (43) and 66 with Craig Borcoski (27), to ensure the early momentum was retained.
Last season against ES Blue, Laughts and Wildy put on 305 for the first wicket, with Wildy finishing on 193. After yesterdays innings, Laughts now has the bragging rights!!
Congratulations Brendon. This is one of the highest scores by a Sydenham player in Christchurch Club Cricket for a very long time. The best ever was 343* by J Gray against Christ College in the 1917-18 season!
Read all about it in the Christchurch Press too.
