One Day Competition - President Cardinals vs Hornby, Sydenham Park #3, Presidents, 31st October 2015
Modern day club cricket is a different beast to old school cricket. One’s priorities are different. When club stalwart Dave Gallop got married, he played Saturday, got married Monday, honeymooned Tuesday through Friday and was back for cricket on Saturday. We hope to see Brownie again in a month – and hope the second spell isn’t that far behind.
And so it was we turned up to Syds 3 on the best day of the season so far with the cool easterly and a few key players absent – to the point we were scratching to field a team against Hornby, who we’d normally back ourselves to slaughter. But with regular features Brownie, Wildy and Ralphie out, and our batting line up looking sketchy, Hornby clearly fancied their chances.
In any event, in honour of Brownie’s big day, we got on top early, Spency in his first appearance this season taking a catch behind of Waza’s first over, and Jules “Bucket Hands” VD snaring one at long on off Ferg’s first over to have Hornby two for seven. From there it was a slow, frustrating burn as Malcolm Lamont provided some stability with an innings of 55 for other players to build around – Brendon with 24 and Bruce Scott with 23 and a cameo 14 from Draper late in the piece for Hornby to finish 170/6, most of the bowlers getting some tap.
Into bat and things took a turn for the worse early with Spency going second ball, and Matty going early too, with the score at 17, and we were more or less into the tail. Jules VD and Laughts stuck around for a bit, Laughts getting 26 and Jules compiling 19 batting at four playing with a back injury to make up the 11, not bowling and struggling in the field. Bert and Flem provided the only other real resistance, Flem getting 12 and Bert going for a stubborn 28.
From 52 for four with the Jules’ departure, we rumbled on to 84 with a mounting run rate before losing the last five wickets for 16 runs, to be all out for 100, 71 runs short in the 33rd.
And so it was that Kate’s big day and Brownie’s big night, we too got a rogering.
