One Day Competition - President Cardinals vs OBC, Ilam Park #4, Presidents, 7th November 2015
A superstitious cricketer might have difficulty deciphering how we burgled a fairly tight one versus Old Boys Collegians as comfortably as we did. It could have been JK turning up late, Ferg ducking away to dancing lessons, Sparkles batting with the new ball in his pocket, or a smurf pissing in Phil B’s gear bag.
However we made our luck, it was a great day for cricket, and it chucked up a few surprises. Laughts won the toss and batted. Wildy’s return didn’t go well – initially – going for duck with the score at four. Laughts followed caught behind for 17 with the score at 29. JK, batting at four departed for one three runs later, and it was left to Ski, batting at three, and Phil Walker batting at five to provide some stability, and once Ski went for 26, Flem, with a partnership of 66. The partnership was broken when Flem skyed one on 33.
Phil B batted to his average and can’t be too far away from a match-fixing allegation. Phil Walker was next to go for a magnificent 50, trying to get on with it and getting stumped off a wide.
Congo (9) and Sparkles (4) provided some valuable runs down the order for Syds Cardinals to finish 163/8.
The second half was a half of two halves. A couple of dropped catches early – both hard chances – saw OBC go to drinks with the score at 70, no wickets down and very much in the game. Something changed at drinks with Flem getting Cotton stumped the first over back, recovering well after going for 12 off his first over. Hamish Anderson was next to go for nine when a ball from Flem hit the pad and dribbled on to the stumps. Carter went for a duck, courtesy of a screamer low down by Phil Walker – certainly a nominee for catch of the season – and Syds was coming back into it, though all the while Bull was compiling at the other end.
Then we revealed yet another bowling option. Wildy, bowling with some real venom off two paces cleaned out Henry for 6, and then Hall for a duck, thanks to a well taken catch by Ferg, both in his third over. Congo chimed in with a wicket via a catch to Wildy who was clearly finding it hard to stay out of the game. Wildy wasn’t done yet, getting McGuire caught Laughts metres inside the long-on boundary. OBC needed 24 off the last over, and finished up 20 short.
Of the bowlers – Sparkles six overs, one maiden none for 20, Ferg, six overs, two maidens none for 13. Flem finished 3 for 23 off eight with one maiden, finishing tidily after getting some tap early. Phil Walker bowled a tidy seven overs in the middle, finishing none for 12 with one maiden. Ski bowled two overs unrewarded, going for 10, and Congo four overs finishing one for 19. Wildy was the star, bowling seven overs, finishing 3 for 23.
A win by 20 runs. Phil Walker gets man of the match – sorry Wildy, the team doesn’t really need another bowling option :-)
Man of the Match: Phil Walker
