3C Cardinals Match Report (23rd January 2016)

One Day Competition - 3C Cardinals vs Southern Districts, Beckenham Park #1, 3C, 23rd January 2016

If this match report was as long as it was hot today I'd still be writing tomorrow. Having lost to these lads by about 160 runs earlier in the season the Cardinals were pretty keen to ensure that this was not repeated. It was not.

Anyway, Camo chose a particularly good day to win the toss and we got the chance to bat first as S.D suffered the midday heat by fielding first. Benny and Harry lost Do' Bro and opened the batting while the umpires sweated profusely in their blazers for the first 10 (rules are rules). Tight bowling led to a slow but steady start. Camo continued his quest for redemption (see previous match report) with a well constructed duck, which bought Livo to the crease. Harry, then Spook left in consecutive balls to their worst bowler, and Smitty was out to face the hat-trick ball at what can only be described as his home ground. Smitty was in a bit of a mood and scored well reaching 29, and ring-in Elliot played some great shots in his 17.

Livo was the star, with a superb 69 in trying conditions. The tail wagged, through Larts particularly, and suddenly we had 212/9 to defend.

Like magic the high cloud rolled in, and the temperature dropped to a reasonably comfortable level for our fielding effort. Standards were high in banter especially (angry Camm and angry Stokesy) but bowling and fielding was good throughout. 0-15 quickly turned into 3-23 for Magilla and both he and Smitty, in part retaliation from a vindictive skipper, bowled 8 straight in the 30 degree heat. Larter then bowled some pretty handy leg spin, and Livo found the energy to finish with figures of 3-2, before being given a spell. Catching was good - special mention to genuinely great catches from Smitty and Angry Stokes. Rolled for 109, win by 103 runs, saw the end of a long, hot, but ultimately enjoyable afternoon, followed by a good turnout at Kaizuka, sans angry Stokes....
