One Day Competition - 3B Goats vs Merivale Papanui, Sydenham Park #3, 3B, 27th February 2016
The final round of the top 6 round robin found the Goats at a very warm Sydenham 3 playing Merivale Papanui.
As one of only 2 teams to beat us in the first round we were pretty keen to reverse the result in this game. Unfortunately we didn't get off to the best start losing the toss and finding ourselves bowling first on what looked like a good pitch and in 30 degree plus heat. With Alex Hewson away Tom got the new ball and he found the pace and bounce in the pitch to his liking taking 2 wickets in his first 3 overs, including a great catch by Rob who was hiding at slip with a sore knee. A wicket for Alex at the other end had them in a bit of trouble at 3/17. With Darren Leigh looking secure at one end they dug in and ground the score up to 82 before Leigh hit one straight up in the air off Jon and Amos took a simple catch.
The next partnership decided it was time to attack and they took the score up to 136 before Alex and Pat came back to break the partnership and run through the tail. At the end of the 40 overs they ended up at 154/9 with Alex Brailey finishing with 4/29. We thought it was a 200 pitch so we fancied chasing 155.
The first ball of our innings made things a little tougher as Rob was bowled by their slippery left armer meaning Jake may as well have opened. Their two opening bowlers kept the pressure on and when Jake fell with the score at 23 in the 10th over things were on an even footing. This brought Josh in to join Chris and after a few quiet overs they put the foot down causing the Merivale bowlers to start to wilt in the heat. The next 16 overs saw a partnership of 108 with Josh bringing up his first 50 for the Goats and it was a surprise when he chopped on with only 24 to get. Chris and Amos took only another 3 overs to knock off the remaining runs and the Goats had the game over with over 10 overs to spare.
Chris finishing 62 not out. A convincing win that could have been even better if we hadn't dropped 7 catches, 3 of them sitters and one when Heath took a great caught and bowled but but tried to throw it up in the air to quickly only to have it hit the ground...doh!
Only losing one game in the top 6 round sees us finish in second position, having beaten every other team in the grade and in a great spot to challange to the grade win.
Bring on the knockout games.
