One Day Competition - President Cardinals vs St Albans, Polo Grounds, Presidents, 22nd October 2016
On a weekend where the weather through the week kept us off grass wickets and deposited us on an artificial surface at the Polo Grounds, there was still a lot to take away from this game against St Albans – and not just the crushing seven wicket victory.
Ralphie started proceedings by winning his second toss in a row, inserting Saints. Then he snared Alabaster early, for eight, in the 10th over with the score at 18. Opener Hampton and Read progressed steadily enough until Hampton (38) edged one off Ski to Waza Guy, who snaffled a well taken catch behind. Fifteen overs gone and the score at 74-2, and with Flavell striding to the crease the game could have got pretty interesting.
Five overs later, at drinks, Saints had only progressed another seven runs to be 81-2, and the second half well and truly belonged to the Cardinals. Some lusty hitting from Flavell saw the score past 100, but then Read was run out by Ski, in a repeat of last week’s effort, and the wheels started falling off. Hillary went for one, caught by Laughts off Matt Loose with the score at 115. Flavell was the fifth wicket to fall at 127 when Laughts moved Phil from the backward square boundary, only for Flav to hit the very next ball straight down his throat.
From then on it was a procession - the sixth wicket going at 130, the seventh at 133, the eighth at 134, the ninth at 136, and eventually Saints were all out in the 38th over for 138, three run outs contributing to the carnage. After Hampton (38), Read (34) and Flavell (25), Alabaster’s eight was the next highest Saint’s score.
Of the bowlers, Brent Dunn was the real surprise, ripping through the tail with 3-8 off 3.4. Ralphie bowled six with one maiden to finish with 1-11. Mario bowled four overs 1-24, Ferg a very tidy 0-16 off five, with one maiden. Matt Loose was also tidy with two maidens in an eight over stint, finishing 1-17. Ski also bowled two maidens in his eight overs, finishing 1-36. JK went for 17 off two. Catches went to Ralphie – a sharp one hander diving to his right at midwicket, Waza Guy, Laughts (2) and Ski.
Into bat and Laughts and Mario got things under way pretty quickly with a number of leg byes helping keep things moving early in the piece. Laughts went caught behind for 31 with the score at 56 in the 10th over, having hit four fours and one six, with Mario going steadily at the other end. Ski bludgeoned 19 before he was caught, and Matt Loose went berserk with a quick 30 featuring only nine scoring shots to get the scores tied before one filthy wog too many proved his undoing. Mario Williams carried his bat for a 40 not out and Waza Guy, batting five, duly did the honours with another filthy wog for four to see Cardinals home in the 28th over with seven wickets in hand.
