President Cardinals Match Report (15th Oct 2011)

One Day Competition - Cardinals vs Hornby, Presidents, Sydenham #3, 15th October 2011

It was an idyllic cricket setting that greeted me upon arrival at Sydenham number 3 shortly after lunch on Saturday. I was pleased to be met by Congo my fellow opener, neither of us were expecting a big crowd in for this early season clash between Sydenham and Hornby at the home of Canterbury Cricket.

I made a good start to my promising captaincy career when I lost the toss and we were duly inserted. Under pretty mixed atmospheric conditions Congo and I got us off to a pretty good start before Congo walked over one and lost his leg stump. We then lost 3 quick wickets and we were suddenly in a precarious position at 31/4. Tim and Spency then set about a magnificent  recovery. Tim looking as good as ever and Spency looking every bit like he might average his age this season, playing the two best shots of the day, an exquisite off drive then a straight drive for six. In the end the 66 run partnership between Tim (45) and Spency (31) enabled us to scrape through to 138 all out. Billy Nics 'Chris Harris' like 10 not out was a vital little cameo towards the end the innings.

With our strong bowling line up I had every confidence 138 would be enough as long as no more than three catches got dropped by the keeper.......... Paul was always going to be too much for the Hornby boys even though they had by far and away the best of the conditions and the pitch.  It was a commanding display from Paul who spearheaded our attack superbly in the absence of our other left arm quick who is away on world cup duty.  Pauls figures of 4-11 are a true reflection of the hold he had over the Hornby batsman.

Paul was well backed up by all of our bowlers. Jules & Ken were there normal parsimonious selves, Flem spun a web. Billy Nic was simply superb coming on when the game was in the balance and bowling extremely well finishing his Man of the Match performance off with 2/28.

Well done boys a good start to the season, hopefully we will have the skipper and keeper back this week. SOS Kevy Moore, we need you in the line up.

Check out the scorecard from the game.
