The Premier Men achieved their first objective of the season when they reached the semi-finals of the one-day competition on Saturday. The Premier Ladies had a win and a loss in their two Kirsty Bond matches, and Division 1 had a solid win to remain in a close 2nd place in their competition.
The Premier Men slumped to their second successive loss which now sees them into a must win match next week. The Premier Women had a loss, Division 1 had a very comfortable win against Lancaster Park to sit comfortably in 2nd= place, and Division 2 went down fighting on Sydenham 2 trying to chase down a massive 333 against BWU.
It was a day to forget for the three top Sydenham sides who all lost some key matches - the Premier Men were in their game for much of it but eventually lost to regular champions St Albans, the Premier women lost by 10 wickets, and the Division 1 guys got a sharp reminder of what a real contest they have on their hands to win promotion.
It is with great sadness that the club announces the passing of Bill "WA" Thomson. Bill was a stalwart of the club, playing from 1960 until 2004, including playing in the Premier team from 1961 until 1984. Bill was made a Life Member in 1992 for his services to the club.
Bill's batting was ledgendary, with 14,916 runs for the club, second on the all-time list behind Ritchie Thomas. Bill leads the run scoring list for the Premiers with 9,386 runs at an average of 25.09. Second on the list is his older brother Keith with 8,811. Bill also managed to snare 94 with his bowling, including a solitary wicket in the Premier grade.
Bill was fearless at the crease, with his distinctive low crouch, but he did put fear in the bowlers that he faced as he dispatched them to all parts of the ground.
Bill played only two first class games, one for Canterbury and one for NZ U23, which should have been more, with a highest score of 55. He also represented NZ at hockey, attending the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, along side his brother Keith.
The club expresses their condolences to Bills family and friends during this very sad time.
The Funeral Service for Bill will be held in the John Rhind Chapel, entry from London or Whitmore Streets, Christchurch, on Tuesday, October 29, at 1.00pm.Hits: 570
